Introduction

Mentor, Coaching and Supervision are key to the ongoing development of coaches, mentors, team coaches and supervisors and the maturation of the coaching profession. The European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), Association for Coaching (AC) and more recently the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as professional bodies have demonstrated the value they place on coaching supervision as a key part of professional practice.

The answer to this question:

Does this coach invest in coaching supervision from a professional supervisor?

is fast becoming the single most reliable indicator of a coach’s commitment to professional excellence.

Mentor Coaching/Supervision is all about helping coaches develop the capability to reflect on their practice and continuously develop through the exploration of their coaching work.

Mentor Coaching, which has been popularised by the ICF, is specifically targeted at the development of core coaching competencies as defined by the ICF. Mentor Coaching/Supervision, at Transcend, includes these dimensions and goes beyond as we work with our coaches to develop the macroskill of reflective practice as one of many ways to develop competency, capacity and capability.

Why choose Transcend for Coaching

Transcend coaching solutions are evidence-based and scientifically informed by adult learning frameworks and systematic processes

Our coaching solutions lead to improvements in both personal and organisational effectiveness through achievement, fulfilment and engagement. Transcend coaches are highly trained with cutting edge and evidence based adult learning methods and tools. They have the background, skill, credibility, presence, experience and independence to hold conversations that challenge and stretch counterparts, inviting them not only to stretch competency in their Areas of Concern but also to alter their “ways of thinking, feeling and being” as needed to support sustainable change. Additionally and importantly, all Transcend coaches have a strong leadership background, are trained in mindfulness and in integrating mindfulness and related practices into their work and must submit to regular supervision, professional development and ongoing assessment.

Coaching Supervision at Transcend

Our coaching supervisors are all trained in both supervision and mentor coaching which means we are able to provide all the benefits of both approaches and meet the accreditation standards of coaching organisations like the ICF and EMCC. According to the ICF, up to 10 hours of Mentor Coaching (giving or receiving) AND up to 10 hours of Coaching Supervision (giving or receiving) may be used towards the required 40 CCEs for renewal and count as Core Competency credits. The EMCC expects all accredited coaches, mentor and supervisors to participate regularly in supervision.

As early adopters of coaching supervision we have extensive experience and a broad base of training in supervision. We have been integrating coaching supervision into our coach and team coach training programmes since 2013.

We have also been active in contributing to the development of supervision through our pioneering work in bringing supervision to Asia and the development of Team Coaching Supervision training in partnership with Professor David Clutterbuck and Dr. Lise Lewis.

All of our coaching supervisors participate regularly in supervision themselves.

Who needs a Supervisor?

Coaching supervision is for any practising coach, team coach, group coach or coaching supervisor. Recommendations vary for how much supervision is needed, but in general, we suggest quarterly supervision as a best practice. Mature coaches often say, “the more we coach, the more we need supervision and the more we have supervision the more we are aware of how important it is.”

Internal and organisational coaches will benefit greatly from coaching supervision as they navigate multiple roles, ethical challenges and seek to develop themselves as coaches. Internal coaches who have participated in supervision have found it an invaluable opportunity to strengthen their work as a coach.

Coaches in-learning might have access to mentor coaching/supervision as a part of their training. Many schools add this on for an additional fee. At Transcend we include it as a part of the programme as we see the development of the capacity to reflect on our practice as an essential part of coach education. If you are a newer coach then our coaching supervision may provide you with needed hours for accreditation or you may want an alternative approach to development. If you have completed coach training with another training provider then consider supervision with us as a way to expand your development.

More about Coaching Supervision

A positive way to look at coaching supervision is that it is a safe and professional opportunity to meaningfully reflect on your practice and development as a coach.

  • It is absolutely vital because:
    • When a coach is willing to commit to supervision then they are investing in the value they create for their clients
    • It indicates a willingness to reflect on their “client work” with a supervisor
    • It means the coach is not an island unto themselves
    • It means the coach is committed to continuous development
    • Coaching Supervision provides the platform for exploration for both present and future coaching practice, including how their coaching is evolving and how they are also evolving as they practice
    • A skilled supervisor will also continuously be bringing into the dialogue their wisdom and experience concerning professional standards, industry trends and ethical perspectives

There are 2 common ways of quantifying the work of supervision provided by Inskipp and Proctor 1993 and Hawkins and Smith 2013. They have been combined in the graphic below.

Formative is about the development of the coach or mentor. The focus in supervision is not about teaching, but so much more about integrating, extending and deepening. This often ranges from tactical to transformational. At deeper levels we focus on enhancing self awareness and the use of self.

Restorative involves helping the coach or mentor access and leverage resources that they have, had or need to acquire. This includes dimensions of personal wellbeing to practical considerations in the execution of a professional coaching assignment.

Normative brings us into the domains of ethics, professional standards, professional practice and value creation.

As you can see, coaching supervision offers a unique and powerful opportunity for the ongoing development of the coach/mentor and of their practice. When a professional supervisor works with a coach, they will reflect together integrating these perspectives in service of creating value for the clients of the coach or coaches.

Our Coaching Supervision Offerings

For coaches and team coaches - we often recommend a blend of group and individual mentor coaching/supervision. We would be happy to create a bespoke programme that incorporates these areas.

    • Group Mentor Coaching/Supervision: groups are a great way to reflect along with other coaches and learn from one another and one another’s learning and experience. We offer group supervision continuously, as well as, some focused group supervision journeys. You don’t have to wait to join. Just let us know and we can invite you to the next session.
    • Individual Mentor Coaching/Supervision: receive supervision in a highly personal, confidential and tailored reflective space from one or more of our supervisors.  We acknowledge the value of a deeper supervision relationship and also the value of diversity in your supervision experience.
    • Team Coaching Supervision: Supervision is uncontroversially acknowledged as vital for team coaches. Join us for group team coaching supervision, as a pair of team coaches or as an individual team coach.

Michelle started her coaching supervision work with her corporate clients in 2015 and with the students of Transcend’s ACTP and EQA programme from 2017. She became an ICF PCC markers accessor in 2018 and got her ESIA (EMCC Global Supervision Individual Accreditation) in Jan 2020.

Michelle has worked as a team coaching supervisor since 2020. She has learned a lot from both David Clutterbuck and Peter Hawkins’ team coaching supervision programme and has practised her team coaching supervision skills by supporting the team coaches who graduated from both David and Peter’s programmes. She believes and practises her supervision by supporting supervisees to understand  better- both the client system and themselves- as part of the client system, and helps them reshape the way they work. She believes her supervisees have to undertake a journey of transformation themselves before they can help their clients experience the same change. Her work in supervision is geared to this end while always bearing in mind the context in which her supervisees are discharging their coaching duties.
